Etymology: Charme(s) share its etymology with Chaume(s), meaning fallow land. (Source: Marie-Hélène Landrieu-Lussigny).
Size: 0.25 ha (0.61 ac)
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vine Age: Planted in 1983 and 1987
Terroir: Pascal’s parcel is in the lower part of the vineyard, at the very north end, up against Les Plantes and Clos des Ormes. It is a stony vineyard, with plenty of angular gravels and cobbles in the red clay soils. Pascal says, “the stony soils provide excellent drainage. In summer, after the last plowing, and when the rain has ‘washed’ the surface of the soil, one has the impression that the vineyard has been paved with white rocks.”
Viticulture: Uncertified biodynamic
Vinification: 50% whole cluster, ambient yeast ferment, aged in oak barrels (about 40% new) for 12 to 18 months. Since 2016, very moderate sulfur additions: none during vinification, a little during élevage and before bottling, for a total of 15 to 20 ppm. Becky Wasserman

"This is aromatically restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes the ripe aromas of cassis, violet and soft spice nuances to reveal themselves. The delicious, sleek and vibrant middle weight flavors are even more refined with a beguiling succulence to the rich, well-detailed and sneaky long finish that is shaped by quite fine-grained tannins. This too is absolutely lovely." Burghound

"The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch this year. It has a more extravagant outgoing bouquet compared to Mugneret’s other 2018s coming across quite sensual with kirsch orange zest and light rose petal aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe tannins and a creamier texture than I was expecting with perhaps more oak to be subsumed with bottle age. Give it three or four years in bottle." Vinous
